Why Should You Learn Linux History?¶
Many beginners skip Linux history because they think it's not important.
However, understanding Linux's history helps you understand why Linux is designed the way it is and why it became the preferred operating system for servers, cloud computing, and enterprise infrastructure.
Every technology has a story—and Linux has one of the most influential stories in computing.
Before Linux: The UNIX Era¶
To understand Linux, we must first understand UNIX.
In the late 1960s, researchers at Bell Labs wanted to create a simple, portable, and multi-user operating system.
In 1969, Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie developed the first version of UNIX.
UNIX introduced many concepts that are still used today:
- Multi-user systems
- Multitasking
- File permissions
- Hierarchical file systems
- Shell scripting
- Small programs that work together
Many modern operating systems, including Linux and macOS, were inspired by UNIX.

This created a need for a free alternative.
The GNU Project¶
In 1983, Richard Stallman launched the GNU Project.
GNU stands for:
GNU's Not UNIX
The goal was to create a completely free operating system that anyone could use, modify, and share.
The GNU Project successfully developed many essential components, including:
- Bash Shell
- GCC Compiler
- Core Utilities
- Text Editors
- Libraries
However, one important component was still missing:
The Kernel
Enter Linus Torvalds¶
In 1991, a Finnish computer science student named Linus Torvalds started working on a small operating system kernel as a personal project.
His goal was simple:
Build a free UNIX-like operating system for personal computers.
He announced the project on an online discussion group.
What started as a hobby project eventually changed the world.
The kernel became known as:
Linux
GNU + Linux¶
Linux by itself is only the kernel.
GNU already had almost everything else needed for a complete operating system.
When the GNU tools were combined with the Linux kernel, users finally had a complete free operating system.
This is why many people refer to Linux systems as GNU/Linux.
What Does Open Source Mean?¶
Open Source means that the source code of a software project is publicly available.
Anyone can:
- View the code
- Study it
- Modify it
- Improve it
- Share it
This encourages innovation, collaboration, and transparency.
