Core concepts

1. What is values.yaml used for?

In short: values.yaml supplies the default configuration that chart templates read through .Values.

Key points

  • Parameterises images, replicas, resources, Service types, ingress hosts, and feature toggles.
  • Treat value keys as a versioned API—document them and avoid silent renames.
  • Override with -f files and limited --set at install/upgrade time.
  • Keep secrets out of committed values; inject via External Secrets, SOPS, or CI.

Trap

  • Renaming a values key between chart versions without a note breaks every consumer silently.

2. What is the syntax or command you follow to deploy an application using Helm Charts?

In short: Deploy by installing a chart as a named release: helm upgrade --install with namespace and values files.

  • Add repos or update chart dependencies first when needed.
  • Prefer upgrade --install for idempotent CI/GitOps-friendly deploys.

3. Explain the folder structure of a basic Helm chart. What commands do you use to deploy with Helm?

4. What is a Helm values file?

In short: A Helm values file is YAML configuration merged into .Values for template rendering—defaults plus per-environment overlays.

Key points

  • Typical maps: image, service, ingress, resources, autoscaling.
  • Split shared versus env files (values.yaml + values-prod.yaml).
  • Later -f files override earlier keys; --set overrides files.
  • Never commit live credentials—reference Secret names or external stores.

Trap

  • A typo in a nested values key fails open to chart defaults—schema validation catches this.

Scenarios and troubleshooting

5. Helm – Upgrade failed. How do you rollback and troubleshoot?

In short: On a failed upgrade, inspect status/history, roll back to a good revision, then fix chart/values and upgrade again.

  • helm status and helm history show the failed revision and prior good ones.
  • helm rollback restores the last known-good release.
  • Use --atomic/--timeout so failed upgrades auto-roll back in CI.
  • Check Pod events and hook Jobs—stuck hooks are a frequent cause.

Trap

  • Force-deleting release Secrets to “unstick” Helm without understanding hooks can orphan cloud resources.

6. If a Helm release is partially deployed and some resources are updated while others have failed, how do you perform a rollback?

In short: Helm 3 stores release revisions in-cluster (Secrets by default); rollback re-applies a prior revision’s manifests even after a partial failure.

  • helm rollback targets a known-good revision from history.
  • Clear or finish stuck hooks carefully before retrying.
  • In GitOps (Argo CD), revert the Git revision and sync—do not fight the laptop CLI.

  • Manual kubectl fixes mid-failure that are not in the chart will vanish or conflict on the next Helm action.

7. How do you securely inject sensitive data into Helm?

Reveal answer

In short: Inject secrets at runtime—never put plaintext credentials in Git-tracked values.yaml.

Key points

  • Prefer charts that reference existing Secret object names.
  • Use External Secrets, Secrets Store CSI, Sealed Secrets, SOPS, or Vault.
  • CI --set from a secret store only when GitOps encryption is unavailable.
  • Rotate any credential that was ever committed; avoid logging helm get values.

Trap

  • helm get values in CI logs often prints injected secrets for everyone to see.

8. Why use Helm instead of plain YAML?

Reveal answer

In short: Helm beats plain YAML when you need templating, packaging, versioned releases, dependencies, and rollback across environments.

Key points

  • Change image digests and replicas through values instead of copy-paste manifests.
  • Release history enables auditable upgrades and rollbacks.
  • Subcharts manage dependencies (databases, shared libs) with constraints.
  • Still keep templates readable—complex logic belongs in controllers/operators sometimes.

Trap

  • Burying business logic in hard-to-test templates creates a second programming language nobody owns.

9. Do you avoid committing secrets in values.yaml?

Reveal answer

In short: Yes—never commit live credentials in values.yaml; commit only non-secret defaults and Secret references.

Key points

  • Use External Secrets / Sealed Secrets / SOPS for anything sensitive.
  • Scan Git history if secrets ever landed there and rotate them.
  • Prefer mounting Secrets as files with tight RBAC.
  • Keep CI from printing helm get values when overrides may be sensitive.

Trap

  • “It’s only staging” passwords in Git still get scraped and reused against production.

10. Can a public Helm chart be customized?

Reveal answer

In short: Yes—customise public charts with your values files, careful --set overrides, or a wrapper chart; fork templates only as a last resort.

Key points

  • Pin chart versions from the repo/OCI registry and read upgrade notes.
  • Wrapper/subchart pattern keeps upstream updates flowing.
  • Fork when values cannot express the change—and plan to upstream or rebase.
  • Render with helm template to review the exact manifests you will apply.

Trap

  • An unpinned hard fork that never pulls upstream CVEs is worse than imperfect values overrides.

11. What files will be present in helm chart?

12. Did you worked on helm charts?

In short: Yes—I have authored app charts (Deployment, Service, Ingress, HPA) and installed platform charts (ingress, cert-manager) with env overlays.

  • Comfortable with dependencies, rollbacks, and Argo CD rendering Helm.
  • Catch breaking upstream value renames with helm template in CI.
  • Use lint/template as merge gates before upgrade.
  • Prefer digest pins for images inside values.

13. How the helm charts work?

In short: Helm merges templates with values into manifests, applies them as a named release, and stores revision metadata in-cluster.

  • Mental model: chart + values → manifests → release revision.
  • Helm 3 has no Tiller—your kubeconfig RBAC decides what applies.
  • install/upgrade/rollback move between revisions.
  • Hooks run Jobs/scripts around the release lifecycle.

  • Assuming Helm “magically” bypasses RBAC leads to confusing permission errors in locked-down clusters.

14. Do you actually use helm for the deployments?

In short: Yes—Helm (often via Argo CD) is how I deploy platform add-ons and applications in production.

Key points

  • CI or GitOps runs helm upgrade --install with pinned chart versions and value files.
  • Pick one desired-state path; avoid raw kubectl fighting Helm-owned objects.
  • Success means release deployed, Pods Ready, and a smoke test passed.
  • Drift detection should make untracked kubectl edits noisy.

  • Using Helm and ad-hoc kubectl apply on the same Deployment guarantees the next sync/upgrade surprise.

15. Do you have exp with helm?
